We are pleased to share with you that Hon Jason Kim
will address the ICAS Summer Symposium: The Korean Diaspora.
Jason Kim, a Councilman
(D) of Palisades Park, New Jersey, is the first Korean-American elected as a councilman
on the East Coast of the United States. Prior to his election to Council in November
2004, Jason served on the Palisades Park Board of Education for eight years, during
which time he was the first Korean-American to be elected as Board President.
Kim was born in Seoul, Korea, and came to the United States in 1975. Jason received
his Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from Queens College of City University
of New York and further studied Computing and Education at Teachers College of Columbia
University, New York. For the past twenty years, he has worked with young people
to encourage them in civic engagement. Jason has also been an active advocate of
the Korean-American community's involvement in political processes, working to bridge
gaps between the Korean-American community and other communities, as well as gaps
between younger generation and first generation Korean-Americans. He is the founder
and President of the Korean-American Voters Association of New Jersey (KAVA), which
was established in 1992 to promote active political involvement of Korean-Americans.
has also served on numerous committees, including the Bergen County Workforce Investment
Board, the Bergen County Task Force on Youth Violence, the Bergen County Human Services
Advisory Council, and the Bergen County Korean-American Democratic Club.
to his public service, Jason has been a lecturer at the Bronx Community College
for the past twenty years. He is the president of Jason Kim Academy, a private education
center that provides college preparatory classes for elementary and high school
Jason is married to Arianna Kim, Ph.D., a research scientist at Columbia
University, New York, and together, they have three young children, Audrey, Bryan,
