Timothy J. O'Brien

Biographic Sketch
Timothy J O'Brien, ICAS Fellow and Director, is a legal advisor to international corporations on acquisitions, investments, restructuring, joint ventures and other projects with a particular focus on the Republic of Korea. He also advises corporate clients from Korea in connection with financing, joint ventures, acquisitions, and real estate development, international trade and other matters outside Korea.
On non-Korea related matters, Tim represents a broad range of international clients in investments in Asia and Asian clients on investments and other activities in the United States, Europe, China and elsewhere.
Tim received his J.D., magna cum laude, in 1976 from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review, and his B.A., cum laude, from Yale College in 1967 with a major in Russian Studies and Classics. Tim has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Korea Society.
After 25 years with Coudert Brothers in New York and Hong Kong, where he was Managing Partner, in 2005 Tim moved to Seoul as Senior Foreign Legal Counsel to Shin & Kim, Korea’s second largest law firm.
He is a frequent speaker at professional and other conferences involving Korea. Tim is fluent in Korean, having served for over five years in Korea as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer and staff member. He is a member of the Bar of the State of New York and a Solicitor of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR.
