Minkyoung Song, ICAS Associate



Dear Friend:

We are pleased to share with you that Minkyoung Song has been appointed, effective immediately, ICAS Associate.

Minkyoung Song is presently a PhD candidate majoring in the field of Social Welfare at the University of Pennsylvania. Her study interests include children and family services; in particular, child care for working mothers and child welfare service provisions. Currently, she is writing on Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) of foster care children in the U.S. In addition, she expands her interests in the study of immigrant minority families. In August 2002, she was a featured speaker at the ICAS Summer Symposium: Korean Diaspora and made a presentation on socioeconomic status of Korean and Latino immigrants in LA with the title "Immigration, Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Status".

Minkyoung did her undergraduate work in Social Education, Teacher’s College, Sung-Shin Women’s University in Seoul, Korea and received a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to the U.S., she worked, in 1994-1996, as a program coordinator and interim representative of Student Exchange program and International Leadership program of Youth and Young Adults in Korea and Japan under the Asian Division of World Council of Churches (WCC). Also, she was involved for eight years in varied community outreach programs and case managements for working adolescents and low-income young adults, juvenile delinquents, orphanages, and young international workers in Seoul, Korea.

In the U.S., Minkyoung handled case management for disability program at Mission Resource Institute (MRI) in 1997-1998. In 1998-1999, she, as a student intern, analyzed state policies of children and family services at the Commissioner of the Office of Policy, Planning, and Analysis, Children and Youth Division, Philadelphia Department of Human Services. She has continued her study on social welfare, concentrating on children and family services while working at the Center for the Study of Youth Policy as a research assistant since 1999. Currently, Minkyoung is a statistical analyst at the Center for Intervention & Practice Research, University of Pennsylvania.
