We are pleased to share with you that Emanuel Pastreich has been admitted to ICAS membership, effective immediately.

Emanuel Pastreich graduated from Yale College in 1987 with a B.A. in Chinese literature. Emanuel spent his junior year abroad at Taiwan National University where he completed all his coursework in Chinese. He went on to study Japanese language and culture. Emanuel obtained an M.A. degree from the Department of Comparative Culture at University of Tokyo, and a Ph.D. from the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. He adopted a comparative approach to his study of East Asia and developed an advanced ability in Chinese, Japanese and Korean during his graduate studies. Emanuel studied 16 months at Seoul National University and six months at Korea University taking advanced courses in Korean literature and as well as Chinese literature before completing his dissertation.

Emanuel began teaching at University of Illinois in 1998 as an assistant professor. He has published articles on the classical Korean novel, Korean-Chinese literary contacts, and East Asian literary history. More recently Emanuel has given presentations on Taiwan-Mainland relations and the prospects for North Korea. He is married to Seung Eun Yi Pastreich and has a two-year old son Benjamin. Thank you.
