Biographic Sketch

 

Peter Brookes is the Principal Advisor for East Asian Affairs with the Republican Staff of the Committee on International Relations in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is responsible to Committee Chairman, Representative Benjamin A. Gilman (R-NY), and the House Republican Leadership for the congressional oversight of, and legislation related to, U.S. foreign, security, and economic policy in East Asia.

Prior to coming to Capitol Hill, Peter served in a variety of public and private professional capacities, including assignments at the State Department; the United Nations; the Central Intelligence Agency; private sector employment in intelligence and defense analysis and engineering; and active duty naval service as an aviator and intelligence officer serving in Central America, East Asia, and the Persian Gulf.

As a Commander (0-5) in the Naval Reserves, he is assigned to the Defense Attache Office Moscow serving as the reserve Assistant Naval Attache. He has also performed reserve assignments with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the National Security Council, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of Naval Intelligence, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency. Peter has been recalled to active duty in support of military operations in Iraq/Kuwait (DESERT STORM); Haiti; and Bosnia (JOINT ENDEAVOR).

Peter Brookes is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (B.S. Engineering); the Defense Language Institute (Diploma Russian); the Naval War College (Diploma National Security and Strategic Studies); Georgetown University (Certificate Business Administration) and the Johns Hopkins University (M.A. American Government). He was a Cox Fellow to West Germany and is highly proficient in the Russian language.

Peter is active in Republican politics and has served in leadership positions at the local, state, and national levels. He is a frequent public speaker on foreign policy issues and the Congress and the author of numerous opinion pieces, journal articles and book reviews on foreign policy, national security and intelligence topics.

His personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal; the Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards); the Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards); several naval and joint unit awards; the Defense Language Institute's Kellogg Award; the Joint Chiefs of Staff service badge; and Naval Aviation Observer (NAO) wings. Peter is a former New York state, national and All-Navy wrestling champion.
