Edwin J Feulner Founder of the Heritage Foundation Receives ICAS Liberty Award
from the Institute for Corean-American Studies (ICAS) Liberty Foundation

Washington D.C. - Dr. Edwin J. Feulner received the Annual Liberty Award from the Institute for Corean-American Studies (ICAS) at its 2015 Annual Award Dinner on December 7, 2015.

The annual celebration dinner was held in the historic Cannon Caucus Room of Cannon House Office Building of the United State House in Washington DC, where over 150 guests attended to celebrate the prestigious event.

Synja P Kim, President and Chairman of ICAS Liberty Foundation, elaborated upon the reason for Dr. Feulner being chosen as the recipient of its 2015 Award.

"Ed will receive the ICAS Annual Liberty Award 2015 in recognition of his significant contributions to promoting Liberty, his outstanding professional achievements, distinguished service to the nation and the people, demonstrated commitment to serving the society, and his exemplary leadership, thus advancing great humanistic values; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Dr. Feulner is the founder of the Heritage Foundation in Washington D.C, an influential think tank that is based on conservative principles. He built up the institution to be now one of the largest privately funded public policy research organizations in the world with more than 250 staff, $170 million in assets, and an annual budget of more than $85 million. He served the foundation as the President from 1977 to 2013.

Delivering congratulatory remarks at this dinner were the Honorable Elaine L Chao, former Secretary of the US Labor Department, Mrs. Becky Norton Dunlop, Vice President for External Relations at the Heritage Foundation, David Hoppe, Chief of Staff of Hon. Paul Ryan, the newly-elected Speaker of the House, and the Honorable Edwin Meese, former Attorney General of President Ronald Reagan.

Among the events of the evening, Becky Norton Dunlop’s witty and insightful description of Dr. Feulner was especially well received to a great applause. She described him in four words; Intellectual, Committed, Adaptive and Steadfast, which also coincide with the name of the hosting institute of the night, ICAS.

Following the congratulatory remarks, Dr. Feulner delivered his award acceptance speech entitled "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". In his speech, he emphasized the importance of "civil society" to our whole social structure and stressed it is central to what America truly is.

"In my 37 years as President of the Heritage Foundation, I always argued that ideas have consequences. And I believe that through the concepts of expanded freedom, of expanded opportunity in education, of increased involvement in entrepreneurial activity, and of active participation in our free political process, we are all contributing to an expanded and invigorated civil society." said Dr. Edwin J. Feulner.

It is his belief that we must preserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for us, but for future generations, and contributing to the advancement of civil society is not a role of just politicians or lawyers, but that of all of us.

Established in 1973, the Institute for Corean-American Studies is an educational and research institution that promotes pertinent relations and conducts appropriate activities to enhance cooperation and to pursue peace and prosperity in association with people of mutual interest, with a special emphasis on multilateral relations between the United States and Asia-Pacific rim nations.

So far 37 prominent leaders and professionals in politics, business, and academia have been honored to receive the ICAS Annual Liberty Award. The Liberty Award 2014 was awarded to Burwell B. Bell, a retired four-star US Army General and a former U.S. Commander in Korea.
