Dear Friend:

We are pleased to share with you that Kurt Campbell (Kurt M. Campbell Bio (icasinc.org)) will address the ICAS Winter Symposium Special on March 1, 2023 730 PM - 900 PM EST Washington DC.

From 2009 to 2013, Kurt served as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, where Kurt is widely credited as being a key architect of the “pivot to Asia.” For advancing a comprehensive US strategy that took him to every corner of the Asia-Pacific region, Secretary Hillary Clinton awarded him the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award (2013) — the nation’s highest diplomatic honor.

Kurt was formerly the CEO and Co-Founder of the Center for a New American Security and concurrently served as the director of the Aspen Strategy Group and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Washington Quarterly.

He is the author or editor of ten books including “Difficult Transitions: Why Presidents Fail in Foreign Policy at the Outset of Power” and “Hard Power: The New Politics of National Security.” Kurt received his BA from the UC San Diego and his doctorate in international relations from Brasenose College at Oxford University.

Kurt is Recipient of ICAS Annual Liberty Award 2013 (Kurt M. Campbell Bio (icasinc.org)); ICAS Annual 2013 Liberty Award Dinner (icasinc.org) and he was a featured speaker at the ICAS Fall Symposium 2001 held at the US Senate where he remarked on "The 9.11.01 Terrorists Attack and US Foreign Policy in the Northeast Asia: Issues and Prospects" (Kurt M. Campbell Paper (icasinc.org)) and at the ICAS Summer Symposium Prologue 2018 held at US Senate (ICAS Summer Symposium Prologue (icasinc.org)) addressing A Road to Peace in the Korean Peninsula and US National Security (video) (The Trump-Kim Summit: A View from Beijing (icasinc.org)).

Kurt is married to Lael Brainard, Federal Reserve Vice Chair, who is set to lead White House National Economics Council.

Thank you.
